Mask

Live performance at Wonga Wetlands, Wiradjuri Country 2023. Presented as part of the Borders Project at GreenHouse National Artist Residency.

When I am alone in nature, there is a feeling of being present as my whole self. There is no judgement from the environment around me. No matter how I show up or what I have done, the place holds me. I feel my part in a living system, a state of constantly unfolding.

Through recently receiving a diagnosis of Autism I learnt the term ‘masking’ and begun to slowly understand that mask I have had on my whole life, and what the process of ‘unmasking’ means.

Being a part of the Borders Project as a producer, artist and collaborator has been an incredible space to learn what my needs are to be more ‘myself’ in the presence of others.

This mask was found on Yorta Yorta Country at the Bridge Art Project site, and was carried onto Wiradjuri Country to Wonga Wetlands. As I developed my relationship with the mask my learnings about unmasking were revealed to me.
